History & Specifications

Know your Proton Wira

1. History
The Wira was introduced in 1993 as a 4-door saloon and was based on the 1992 Mitsubishi Lancer design, but the styling was slightly modified to distinguish it from the Lancer. Modifications include headlights from the 1992 Mitsubishi Colt, tail lights from the 1987 Mitsubishi Galant hatchback, bumpers from the Mitsubishi Mirage and a different dashboard. The frontal design continues the styling first shown on the Proton Iswara with a fluted bonnet that tapers towards the Proton badge on the grill. In 1994, a 5-door hatchback version (initially badged as the Wira Aeroback, in a similar fashion as the 5-door Saga hatchback) was introduced.
Proton was originally in the works of a little-known 5-door estate variant of the Wira during the mid-1990s, basing the car on the saloon Wira and sporting similar taillights as the first facelifted Wira.[citation needed] This revelation came into light roughly the same time following the publishing of a photograph on a local newspaper, depicting an abandoned estate Wira prototype outside Proton's assembly plant in Shah Alam.[citation needed] As little news was available on the car thereafter, however, the proposed model is presumed to have never ventured beyond conceptual stages.[citation needed]
A minor facelift for all new Wira variants was introduced in 1995 with a new grille and slimmer tail lights with clear indicators. Other minor changes were made on the interior, grille design and bumpers during the late-1990s and mid-2000s. While having undergone three minor reiterations, the general design of the Wira has, for more than a decade, remained mostly the same.
In 2004, Proton introduce the Wira Special Edition or known as WiSE, and plan to manufactured an estimated 100,000 but failed to meet sales target. The WiSE models were released in different periods of the Wira's model years as Aeroback variant, with sportier accessories such as full bodykits, redesigned interiors and an option for an aluminium spoiler. Later that year, all the Wira and Satria variants included the same front bumper as the WiSE.
Several Proton models released following the Wira's debut sported frontal stylings that were derivatives of the Wira's. Among them, the original Satria 3-door hatchback, the Putra 2-door "sports" coupé, and the Arena coupe utility.
In an attempt to find a suitable successor to the Wira, the Gen-2, a hatchback codenamed the Wira Replacement Model, was designed and developed in-house by Proton, and was launched in 2004. In August 2007, the Persona, a new sedan model directly based on the Gen-2, was introduced. Its introduction is seen as a legitimate replacement for the Proton Wira range, but the Wira is still offered in Proton's line of models.

In its first series, a 1.3-litre 12-valve engine was available on basic-specification Wiras. The Mitsubishi 4G15 1.5-litre 12-valve engine used in the Iswara and its predecessor the Saga was carried over unchanged. The Mitsubishi 4G92 113 PS (111 hp/83 kW) 1.6L 16-valve SOHC engine with multi-point fuel injection was introduced together with an optional 4-speed automatic transmission (and power windows for all 4 doors), a first in Proton's history. The multi-point injection versions were badged as MPi, although this was only used on the engine, and never on the trim levels (unlike 1.5 MPi GLS in the previous car, the Saga, the trim levels were simply 1.5 GLS etc.).
In 1995, the Mitsubishi 4G13 1.3-litre 12-valve engine also used in the Saga was introduced for the Wira. This was followed in 1996 by the 133 bhp (99 kW) 1.8L 16-valve DOHC engine with multi-point fuel injection, making Wira a first Proton car to be powered by a DOHC engine. At the same time, a 2.0-litre diesel-powered variant (badged as the 2.0D, or the SDi in some markets) was also offered but was later phased out in later years due to lack of interest from consumers. The diesel-powered Wira is to date the only diesel vehicle produced by Proton. From 1999, all engine options for the Wira in Malaysian market were fuel-injected and carbureted models were phased out.
In 2001 the Wira received suspension tuning from Lotus.

Talks to save Proton failed

According to a report by The Edge, talks between car manufacturers Proton Holding Bhd and Europe's largest car manufacturer, Volkswagen AG and the producer of the renowned Volkswagen Van parts --- which last year by walking according to which the Malaysian government hopes to.

The weekly has reported that officials from Proton and Volkswagen had several times, but no concrete agreement has been developed. The newspaper added that the talks have not and that it seems as if the German car manufacturer has something "cool" and recently appeared less enthusiastic.

The newspaper quoted a source with the situation with the words: "This delay could be any doubt." The Malaysian government is also under pressure to announce details of the partnership for the loss of the proton, which lost its status as the country's largest-selling car manufacturer Perodua rivals. The Government believes that the news of the cooperation with Proton, Volkswagen can help to recover.

Last week, Proton announced its third consecutive quarter of losses, which they make in terms of increased competition and weak sales. The company posted a net loss of 281.45 million RGT for the third quarter compared to December net profit in the previous year, an amount of 86.51 million RGT.

The Second Minister of Finance Mohamad Yakcop also said that the government would be an announcement on Proton's strategic partner in this Monday Nobody knows whether it is still the Volkswagen or any other company. But after The Edge newspaper: "If this timetable is adhered to strictly, sources say General Motors, the world's largest car manufacturer, the partner of choice for Proton."

The main objective of the partnership with Proton with a foreign car manufacturer is to prevent an otherwise declining market share of the heated competition. It should be noted that when the news of a possible partnership with Volkswagen have leaked by the shares of Proton has increased, but following the news of the partnership was not confirmed, the shares of Proton crashed.

Apart from Volkswagen, Proton is in talks with GM and PSA Peugeot Citroen of France and three Malaysian automotive firms have expressed an interest in buying shares in the company. It should be noted that the Malaysian government owns 59 percent of Proton, with a share of 43% owned by Khazanah Nasional, the investment arm of the government.

Facts you need to know about Proton Wira

Here's my thought about Kereta Wira

WASHINGTON: This particular Proton Wira has travelled thousands of kilometres, from Malaysia to Sri Lanka, and now, to its new home in Tysons Corner, the business hub of northern Virginia.
Mohamad Noor Mat Isa is the proud owner of this Proton Wira 1.6 Millennium edition. The Malaysian diplomat and his right-hand drive Wira catch the attention of American drivers.
He recalls a time when he was at an intersection somewhere in Tysons Corner.
The driver was ahead of me at a traffic lights, but he slowly reversed his car just to take a look at my car, and he said, Wow! That is a cool car, but you are driving on the wrong side of the road, man!
He has also been asked many times where the car comes from because of the yellow crescent and star logo, and the unique metallic green colour of the Wira is rarely seen on American cars here.
Mohammad Noor ordered the limited Millennium edition directly from Malaysia for his own use overseas.
Apparently, there was not much of a hassle bringing the car into the United States from Sri Lanka when he arrived here in July 2002. However, the US Department of State prohibits diplomats from selling cars brought in for personal use, which means Mohammad Noor has to take it home or to his next posting.
When the weather is nice and sunny, driving the Proton is a wonderful experience. Last summer, he took his family for an eight-hour drive to the Niagara Falls in upstate New York.
That was a wonderful drive, but I felt that the car was a bit unstable on American highways, especially with huge trucks and big SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles) passing me left and right. To be safe, I always take the slow lane on the right, he says.
There are also bad days like the winter months when piles of snow had to be scraped from his car. Last winter was quite bad.
With ice on the road, my car just skidded and spun out of control in the middle of the road. Luckily there was no traffic, he says.
Made for the tropics, the car is not equipped for winter driving. It does not come with a heater. So, Mohammad Noor bought a small portable heater which he plugged to the cigarette lighter adapter plus bundle myself in layers of clothes to get me through the cold weather.
Since auto shops here do not have Proton spare parts, the embassy official usually orders through his friends who return home for leave to stock up on things like air filters, oil filters, timing belts, bulbs and spark plugs. He spent RM1,000 for supplies in the last trip.
Despite these minor glitches, Mohammad Noor is happy with his car but has bought a used car for back-up, in case, snow hits Washington again.
